The Narendra Modi Stadium is located in the Indian state of Gujarat, situated on the banks of the river Sabarmati and in the peripheral region of Ahmedabad.
The stadium was originally established in 1982, but it underwent extensive renovations. Major updates were made in 2006, including new pitches, an outfield, floodlights, and covered stands.
A significant redevelopment project was carried out between 2015 and 2020, leading to the stadium's inauguration in February 2021.
The stadium's modernization was spearheaded by the current Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and it was named after him.
The project cost an estimated 800 crore INR (approximately 100 million USD).
The Narendra Modi Stadium is the largest cricket stadium globally and can accommodate approximately 134,000 spectators.
It has hosted significant matches during various Cricket World Cups, including the 1987, 1996, and 2011 editions.
Historically known for assisting bowlers, the stadium has recently seen more competitive matches.
It has witnessed significant cricket records, including Sunil Gavaskar's achievement of 10,000 Test runs against Pakistan in 1986-87 and Kapil Dev surpassing Richard Hadlee as Test cricket's leading wicket-taker with his 432nd Test wicket.
