Protest against eviction drive at Guwahati’s Silsako Beel

Protest Affected people of eviction drive raised their voice against government's action against eviction drive which was carried out in Guwahat's at Guwahati’s Silsako Beel in February this year.

Slams Government During the protest, the protestors came down heavily on the government and alleged that the latter carried out eviction without proper notification.

300 houses brought down In the eviction drive, around 300 houses were brought down by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) which was illegally.

132 acres of land cleared At least 1,000 police personnel were deployed at Guwahati’s Silsako Beel to clear out around 132 acres of land from alleged encroachers. A temple dedicated to the goddess Durga and one to Lord Shiva was also pulled down.  

Houses paying tax Those within 100 meters between the water channels on the periphery of Silsako Beel up to Narengi were evicted in February 27. Some of these houses were also paying property taxes to GMC for the last couple of years.

GMDA Chairman However, the GMDA Chairman, Narayan Deka, said that no one can claim rights for land in the name of GMC holding number. It is just a tax they are paying for staying in the Guwahati city. It is applicable for people staying in both Myadi patta (permanent land settlement) and government land.

Eviction drive in other parts The Himanta Biswa Sarma government has been carrying out eviction drives in various parts of Assam since assuming power in May 2021. 

Mosques & Madrassas Over the past three months, some major eviction exercises have been conducted wherein temples, mosques and madrassas have also been pulled down.
