Sessa Orchid Sanctuary: Arunachal's Mission to Conserve Orchids

The Sessa Orchid Sanctuary is located on the West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh.

Where is it?

This park spreads around 100 sq. km between Bomdila and Bhalukpong, it is filled with lush greenery with colourful orchids.

Orchid Wonderland

There are over 200 orchid varieties found here, some of which are quite rare and endangered to be precise.

Types of Orchids

Sessa is part of the Kameng protected area complex (KPAC), the largest contiguous closed-canopy forest tract of Arunachal Pradesh.

Closed Canopy Forest

There are 5 new and endemic species. The sanctuary is unique in having 7 endemic species of saprotrophic orchids. 12 rare species of different families were found in one study of the area.

Rare Orchids

Several species of animals birds are also found at Sessa. These include red panda, pheasants and serow. 

Fauna

Sessa is within the Conservation International Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot area.

Conservation

Sessa Orchid Sanctuary is best visited during the months between October and April.
