Teesta and Rangit, two iconic rivers of Sikkim, are believed to be creations of Mother Goddess Itbu-moo, forming the backdrop of a timeless love story.
The river spirits, Rongnyu and Rangeet, embark on a race from the Himalayas to the plains, their journey guided by Tutfo, the mountain bird, and Parilbu, the snake.
Despite Tutfo's swiftness, Rangeet loses the race due to distractions, leading to a heartbreaking turn of events in the love story.
Rangeet's wounded pride unleashes havoc as he flows back home, causing a deluge that submerges Mayel Lyang, prompting desperate prayers from the inhabitants.
Tundong Lho, a mountain in South Sikkim, rises to save lives, becoming a sacred site where the Lepchas celebrate the Tundong Lho Ruum Faat festival.
Kahomfo, the partridge, makes an offering to Kongchen Kongchlo, seeking mercy for the earthly creatures, leading to Itbu-moo's relenting and the receding of the deluge.
Rongnyu's plea reconciles Rangeet, and Itbu-moo blesses their eternal love, renaming Rongnyu as Teesta, as the rivers flow together, never to part again.
Inspired by this epic tale, Lepchas continue to honor Teesta and Rangit, making offerings at their confluence, and incorporating the story into wedding traditions.
