Ruskin Bond was born on May 19, 1934, in Kasauli, British India (now Himachal Pradesh). He spent his childhood in various places across India, owing to his father's job in the Royal Air Force.

He started writing at a young age and published his first novel, "The Room on the Roof," at 17. This novel won him the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957.
