A unique nature reserve is to be found inland on Rhodes Island, “Butterfly Valley” or in Greek “Petaloudes Valley”.
This is a habitat with dense flora, breathtaking natural beauty, harmonious structures of bridges with the environment, paved paths, ponds, small inexhaustible waterfalls, serene atmosphere and a unique experience for the visitors.
These creatures lay their eggs at the end of the wet season and are usually found clinging to the many Zitia or Oriental Sweetgum trees.
This green valley is nice for an easy nature walk and has a small Natural History Museum worth checking out, too.
The Oriental sweetgum trees in Petaloudes Valley give off a scent that attracts the moths and creates a unique biotope.
Owing to the increased number of visitors, the Euplagia are facing population issues as they have no stomach and when disturbed tend to fly frequently and thus deplete their energy.
They move constantly towards areas with high humidity, always following the "water ways", and as the dry period progresses, they finally arrive at the valley.
The disturbance of visitors is forcing the butterflies to fly all day, consuming valuable energy.
