Unveiling Assam's Silkworm Delicacy

Jan 08, 2024

Silkworm, a culinary delicacy in Assam, may be unfamiliar to some locals. Despite its unusual appearance, the dish is enjoyed for its unique taste.

For those interested in trying it, purchasing silkworms from a supermarket is not recommended; instead, sourcing them from a local Assamese resident is advised.

The silkworm, an insect, is primarily known for its role in silk production. The silk is derived from the outer cocoon, whilst the edible part is the deceased insect inside.

To prepare the dish, boiled silkworms and green chillies are required. The process involves lightly oiling a pan, adding chopped green chillies and sliced onions for added flavour, and frying the silkworms for a short duration.

The dish is ready when the onions turn red. The dish should be served hot. As the silkworms are pre-boiled, they don't require extensive frying. First-time tasters are likely to appreciate its unique taste.
