World Arthritis Day, initiated by ARI in 1996, is celebrated globally on October 12th to raise awareness about arthritis, its symptoms, and the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.
Arthritis is a widespread, chronic joint inflammation affecting millions worldwide, causing pain and mobility issues. It's not just associated with old age and can affect individuals of any age or gender. Arthritis has various forms, each with unique symptoms. Its unpredictable nature makes diagnosis and management challenging. Types include rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, psoriatic, and gouty arthritis, each requiring specific treatment approaches.
Dr. Pramod Bhor, a orthopedic surgeon at Fortis Hospital, explains that arthritis is caused by genetics, with certain genes increasing the risk of certain types like rheumatoid arthritis and gout. However, environmental factors, joint injury, and inflammation are also significant contributors. Lifestyle factors like smoking, obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise routines contribute to chronic inflammation.
Arthritis is a condition characterized by a dull ache and burning sensation in the affected joint, worsening with joint use. It can lead to joint swelling, restricted movement, redness, stiffness upon waking, and difficulty performing daily tasks due to reduced lubrication.
Excess weight increases joint stress, increasing arthritis risk. A balanced diet and regular exercise can reduce strain on joints. Strength-training exercises and low-impact activities like swimming, cycling, and walking are beneficial. Yoga improves flexibility and balance. Protect joints with proper body mechanics, safe techniques, and protective gear.
Joint pain, stiffness, tenderness, loss of flexibility, grating sensation, bone spurs, and swelling are common symptoms of a joint injury. Joint stiffness is most noticeable during awakening or inactivity. Tenderness may occur when applying light pressure, and joint loss may occur due to soft tissue inflammation.
Arthritis is primarily caused by an immune system defect, potentially inherited genetically, while other forms can be triggered by immune system issues or metabolic conditions like gout.
The causes of many types of arthritis are not fully known. Most forms of arthritis are thought to be caused by a fault in the immune system that causes the body to attack its own tissues in the joints. This may be inherited genetically.
Joint pain may worsen during the night due to fluid buildup or chemical processes in your body that cause inflammation. But at-home treatments and adjustments to your daily and nighttime routines may help you get a good night's sleep.
